YouTube is Finally Set to Get Social Viewing on Quest
Two years ago, Meta announced plans to introduce a social viewing feature for watching YouTube videos together in Quest’s Horizon Home. After a delay, the company has now confirmed that social viewing for YouTube in VR is finally ready.
While it has been possible to watch YouTube videos with friends in VR, the process has not been user-friendly. Users had to download additional apps with separate accounts and friends lists. Ideally, the feature would be integrated directly into the existing YouTube VR app on Quest.
In 2022, Meta initially announced that social viewing was coming to YouTube VR on Quest, but the feature never materialized. Now, Meta has reconfirmed that YouTube VR will indeed be getting a social viewing feature.
Users will be able to start a co-watching session from within the YouTube VR app, allowing others to join them in Horizon Home to watch the same content. The feature is expected to support not only traditional YouTube videos but also immersive 180 and 360 VR content.
Meta has announced that the feature will start rolling out next week, although the exact number of users that can join a session is not yet known.
