You need to clean your microwave more often. Here’s how.
Cleaning your microwave thoroughly is often overlooked until a messy incident occurs, like a food explosion. However, even small messes can harbor bacteria, despite the common belief that microwaves kill germs with radiation. Your microwave can actually host its own microbiome, as some microbes can withstand the radiation and thrive in certain areas. Regular cleaning is essential to maintain microwave hygiene, and fortunately, it can be done easily with common kitchen ingredients.
Materials needed
- Water
- White vinegar
- Baking soda
- Sponge or microfiber cloth
- Microwave-safe bowl
- Dish soap
Step-by-Step Cleaning Process
Step 1: Prepare the cleaning solution
Create a solution by mixing equal parts of water and vinegar in a microwave-safe bowl. You can also use lemon juice for a fresh scent or add baking soda for extra cleaning power for tough stains. This solution will help loosen grime and deodorize your microwave during the cleaning process.
Step 2: Microwave the solution
Heat the cleaning solution in the microwave for 3-5 minutes on high. Let it boil and create steam inside the unit. Do not open the door immediately after heating; allow the steam to loosen the grime and food particles for easier cleaning.
Step 3: Wipe down the interior
After the steam has had time to work, open the door, remove the turntable, and wipe down the interior with a sponge or cloth. Pay special attention to walls, ceiling, and under the turntable, where residue tends to accumulate.
Step 4: Clean the turntable
Wash the turntable with dish soap and warm water, scrubbing well to remove any food particles. Dry it thoroughly before placing it back in the microwave.
Step 5: Tackle tough stains
For stubborn stains, make a paste of baking soda and water, apply it to the stains, and let it sit for 5-10 minutes before scrubbing away the grime.
Cleaning the exterior
Wipe down the exterior of the microwave, including the door and buttons, with a damp cloth and degreasing cleaner if needed. Pay attention to areas prone to fingerprints and grease buildup.
Prevention tips
To prevent future messes, cover food with a microwave-safe lid or paper towel before heating. Wipe up spills immediately to prevent them from hardening and becoming harder to clean later.
How often should you clean your microwave?
Professional cleaners recommend deep cleaning your microwave at least twice a week, especially if it gets heavy use or frequent splatters. Regular wiping after each use can help prevent buildup and maintain a clean microwave.
