Xenoblade dev Monolith Soft is now completely owned by Nintendo, but considering it hasn't released a game on a different platform in almost 20 years, it probably doesn't mean that much

Nintendo now fully owns Monolith Soft, the renowned developer behind the Xenoblade Chronicles series and a key support studio for Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Over the past decade, Monolith Soft has established itself as a prominent player in the gaming industry with its robust RPGs and contributions to various Nintendo titles like Breath of the Wild, Animal Crossing: New Horizons, and the Splatoon series. The acquisition by Nintendo, as reported by Automaton, solidifies the long-standing relationship between the two entities.

Since 2011, Nintendo has held 96% of Monolith Soft’s shares, with the remaining 4% retained symbolically by the company’s founders. However, recent reports indicate that Nintendo now owns Monolith Soft in its entirety. Given Monolith Soft’s history of developing exclusively for Nintendo platforms since 2006, this acquisition is unlikely to result in significant changes for the studio.

While it remains unclear if Monolith Soft has any original projects in development, fans can look forward to the release of Xenoblade Chronicles X on the Nintendo Switch in March next year. This highly anticipated title marks a significant milestone for fans of the series. As the gaming landscape evolves, with the potential launch of a new Nintendo console next year, Monolith Soft’s future endeavors are sure to captivate audiences.
