Where to get Surf in Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow

During the early days of Pokemon, Surf was a beloved HM move for many trainers. It was a powerful water move with high base power and reliable accuracy, unlike the frustrating Hydro Pump. The best part? You could teach it to multiple Pokemon in your team!

Surf also opened up a world of exploration, granting access to the vast southern region of the map and unlocking new possibilities for your journey.

However, like other HMs in the first Pokemon games, finding Surf can be a challenge if you don’t know where to look!

Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow Surf location

To obtain Surf, you must venture to the Safari Zone in Fuchsia City and navigate to the final area. However, reaching this location can be tricky as you’ll need to use most of your steps wisely. It’s recommended to focus on reaching Surf first before catching Pokemon.

From the Safari Zone entrance after receiving your Safari Balls, head upwards and to the right to the next screen. Proceed right until you reach a raised platform. Climb onto the platform, go left, then up, and use another platform to continue towards the top of the area, leading to a new screen on the left.

Move a bit to the left, then upwards through the grass, using a raised mound to proceed left. Double back and head up towards the top of the screen.

Turn right, go up, then left until you reach a line of trees. Descend all the way down and cross the scene transition.

The first Pokeball you encounter holds the Gold Teeth required for Strength. Head left from this Pokeball to discover a hidden house where you’ll receive the Surf HM as a reward!

Defeat Fuchsia City’s Gym Leader Koga to use Surf outside of battles and make the most of this powerful water move.

Which Pokemon can learn Surf in Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow?

In Generation 1, most water-type Pokemon (excluding Magikarp) can learn Surf. Surprisingly, other Pokemon like Snorlax, Lickitung, Rhydon, Kangaskhan, Nidoking, and Nidoqueen can also learn this move.

Despite the existence of the Surfing Pikachu Pokemon card, Pikachu and Raichu couldn’t learn Surf in-game until later generations.
