Meta’s Facebook and Instagram experienced a widespread outage affecting thousands of users in the United States on Wednesday (December 11, 2024), as reported by outage tracking website Downdetector.com.
During the outage, there were over 105,000 reports of issues with Facebook and more than 70,000 with Instagram, with the disruption beginning around 12:50 p.m. ET.
In addition to the Facebook and Instagram outage, Meta’s messaging app WhatsApp also experienced downtime for more than 12,000 users, according to Downdetector.com.
Despite the widespread impact, Meta did not provide an immediate response to a request for comment from Reuters.
Some users of Facebook and Instagram took to alternative platform X to report encountering an error message stating “something went wrong” and indicating that Meta was actively working on a fix.
Overall, hundreds of thousands of users worldwide were affected by the Facebook and Instagram outage, which lasted for more than two hours.
