Getting To and Around Berkeley

Berkeley is a city that can easily be explored without the need for a car. During our trip, we chose to fly into Oakland International Airport and then took the BART train to Downtown Berkeley, where our hotel was located.

AIRPORTS: There are three international airports that you can fly into when visiting Berkeley.

  • Oakland International Airport (OAK) is the most convenient and closest airport to Berkeley. You can take the BART train from the airport and reach one of three stations in Berkeley.
  • San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is another good option, especially if there are more flight options available from your home airport. The BART train also connects this airport to Berkeley.
  • San Jose International Airport (SJC) is another airport to consider, although you will need to rent a car to reach Berkeley from this airport.

BART, or the Bay Area Rapid Transit, has three stations in Berkeley: Downtown Berkeley, North Berkeley, and Ashby Stations. This is a convenient option if you are flying into OAK or SFO, as you can easily reach Berkeley or other nearby cities like San Francisco, Oakland, Walnut Creek, and Concord.

Although we didn’t use it much once we were in Berkeley, the BART train system made it easy for us to travel to and from the airport. A helpful tip is to add the Clipper card to your iPhone’s wallet for easy reloading of your fare card.

GETTING AROUND BERKELEY: Berkeley is a pedestrian-friendly city. After arriving, we primarily explored on foot and used ride-sharing services for longer distances.
