What is QD-OLED? The hybrid TV tech fully explained
When you combine a QLED TV with an OLED TV, you get QD-OLED, which stands for Quantum Dot Light Emitting Diodes. This technology has made QD-OLED TVs some of the best TVs available due to their exceptional picture quality.
QD-OLED TVs deliver a wide color gamut and intense brightness levels, especially when watching HDR content. The self-emissive OLED screen with a layer of quantum dots allows QD-OLED TVs to achieve deep black levels similar to traditional OLED TVs.
While QD-OLED is still relatively new, TV brands like Samsung and Sony have been incorporating this technology into their latest models. The combination of OLED and quantum dots enhances brightness and color accuracy, offering the best of both worlds.
What is QD-OLED?
QD-OLED is a hybrid display technology that enhances the brightness and color of OLED TVs through the use of quantum dots. By improving the light emission of OLED pixels, QD-OLED achieves stunning contrast and perfect blacks while boosting brightness levels.
QD-OLED TVs from Samsung and Sony have received high ratings for their picture quality, showcasing the potential of this technology. With advancements like transparent displays and rollable screens, QD-OLED is expected to offer new possibilities in TV design.
How does QD-OLED work?
QLED TV
QLED TVs use LED backlights, quantum dots, LCD matrix, and a color filter to produce images. Quantum dots help improve color accuracy without compromising brightness, resulting in bright and colorful displays.
However, QLED TVs struggle to achieve deep black levels and may have issues with off-angle viewing due to their backlighting system.
OLED TV
OLED TVs utilize OLED light sources and color filters to create images. OLED pixels can emit their own light, offering near-perfect viewing angles and deep blacks.
Despite their advantages, OLED TVs have limitations in brightness compared to QLED TVs and are prone to burn-in issues over time.
QD-OLED: Busting the brightness barrier
QD-OLED enhances OLED brightness and color accuracy by optimizing light emission and eliminating the need for a color filter. By using blue OLED material and quantum dots, QD-OLED achieves true RGB displays with improved brightness levels.
QD-OLED: more affordable?
QD-OLED TVs may become more cost-effective than OLED TVs by simplifying manufacturing processes and reducing energy consumption. Eliminating the color filter and improving brightness efficiency could lead to lower production costs in the future.
Having your (OLED) cake and eating it, too
QD-OLED displays address the trade-offs of OLED materials by distributing brightness across multiple layers of blue OLED material. This approach improves efficiency and extends the lifespan of OLED pixels, resulting in brighter and more energy-efficient displays.
Who makes QD-OLED TVs?
Samsung Display is currently the main manufacturer of QD-OLED panels, supplying them to companies like Sony and Samsung Electronics. While other companies may enter the market, Sony and Samsung are leading the way in QD-OLED technology.
When will QD-OLED TVs be available to buy?
You can purchase QD-OLED TVs from Samsung and Sony, although product names may vary between retailers. Samsung’s S90D and S95D models, as well as Sony’s Bravia XR A95L, are available in various sizes.
How much do they cost?
Pricing for QD-OLED TVs varies, with Samsung models generally priced lower than Sony’s. Discounts and promotions may offer more affordable options for consumers looking to invest in QD-OLED technology.
Is QD-OLED the last word in TV technology?
While QD-OLED offers significant improvements in picture quality, advancements like Quantum Dot Electroluminescence (QDEL) and MicroLED technology continue to push the boundaries of TV innovation. These technologies aim to deliver even brighter, thinner, and more energy-efficient displays in the future.
