What I Want My Teens to Know About Being ‘Average’

Published

on

Average is defined as someone who is similar to everyone else, an average person. It is important to celebrate normalcy and not put pressure on individuals to constantly strive for perfection. While it is essential to support academic challenges and goal-setting, not everyone needs to be an overachiever. It is okay to be an “Average Joe.”

Reflecting on personal experiences, the author recalls their ordinary high school experience in a suburb outside Milwaukee. They discuss the pressure felt by students in gifted and talented programs and the expectations placed on high achievers. The author questions the necessity of pushing young students to take on excessive academic loads and extracurricular activities at a young age.

The author advocates for a more balanced approach to parenting and education, emphasizing the importance of allowing children to have a childhood free from excessive stress and pressure. They highlight the value of traditional family activities and downtime, urging parents to prioritize their children’s well-being and mental health over academic achievements. Ultimately, the author encourages a shift towards raising responsible, caring individuals who can contribute positively to society.

We also need our children to have the skills to change a bike tire, communicate on the phone, and, most importantly, to feel confident in themselves!

Being average is normal…and being normal is perfectly fine!

Just strive to be the best version of yourself and find happiness!
