Watch this stunning aurora captured from space

Stunning footage from the International Space Station (ISS) captures a beautiful aurora shimmering above the Earth.

Recorded last month and shared by the ISS, the video starts with a faint green glow on the horizon as seen from the space station 257 miles above. As the footage progresses, the green glow transforms into a spectacular display against a backdrop of stars.

“The International Space Station soars above an aurora covering the Earth under a starry sky before entering a sunrise 257 miles above Quebec, Canada, on October 30, 2024,” NASA stated with the 60-second video.

Auroras, caused by the interaction of solar wind with Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere, are a common sight for ISS astronauts, particularly during periods of intense solar activity.

NASA astronaut Matthew Dominick, who recently returned from a six-month stay at the station, described auroras as “insane” and shared a remarkable video of one behind Boeing’s Starliner spacecraft while docked at the ISS earlier this year.

Having witnessed auroras from the space station, NASA astronaut Jasmin Moghbeli remarked, “Every time I’m amazed at how alive and beautiful our planet is,” while current ISS astronaut Don Pettit described a recent encounter as “stunning,” adding, “We were not flying above the aurora, we were flying in the aurora. And it was blood red.”

Just last month, Pettit, NASA’s oldest serving astronaut at 69, expressed the phenomenon in his own unique way, stating, “The sun goes burp and the atmosphere turns red.”
