Warner and DC Smash 'em up MultiVersus joins the pile of dead live service games

Warner Bros’ licensed free-to-play fighting game MultiVersus – also known as the game where Velma Dinkley and Arya Stark can team up to take on Superman – will no longer be available to play online after May 30th. It will be removed from Steam, the Epic Games Store, and the PlayStation and Xbox stores at the end of its next season. However, players can still enjoy offline gameplay, either against friends or bots.

Season 5 is set to begin on February 4th, introducing DC’s Aquaman and Looney Tunes’s Lola Bunny as new characters. Real money transactions within the game have been suspended, but players have until May 30th to use any in-game currency or character tokens they have. Aquaman will be the first tier battlepass reward, while Lola will be the daily calendar login reward for Season 5.

A guide has been provided for playing MultiVersus offline once the servers are taken down:

All online features will be available until May 30th at 9 a.m. PST. After that, players can choose to play MultiVersus offline in local gameplay mode, either solo against A.I. opponents or with up to three friends. To do this, players must download the latest version of the game and log in during Season 5, between February 4th at 9 a.m. PST and May 30th at 9 a.m. PST. A local save file will be created automatically, allowing players to enjoy the game offline with all their earned and purchased content.

Despite some skepticism, MultiVersus was well-received by the RPS community at one point. It was featured on lists of the best free PC games, co-op games, and multiplayer games. The game’s presence can still be found through the article tags.

Reflecting on the open beta in July 2022, Ed Thorn (RPS in peace) described MultiVersus as a “cracking fighting game that’s only going to evolve over the coming months.” Unfortunately, this evolution will no longer happen.

The future of developers Player First Games, acquired by Warner Bros last year, remains uncertain. Warner’s games division has faced challenges, with Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League struggling at launch. Like MultiVersus, Rocksteady added an offline mode before ending support.
