Wa-hoo! The sequel to the Super Mario Bros Movie gets a name, thanks to NBCUniversal prematurely pressing let’s a-go

The upcoming sequel to the 2023 Super Mario Bros. Movie seems to have accidentally had its name revealed early, thanks to a mistake in a press release by NBCUniversal. The film appears to be titled Super Mario World, not to be confused with the classic 90s SNES game.

The announcement of this sequel was made in March last year, as Nintendo, Universal, and others decided to capitalize on the success of the original film. The success of this year’s Minecraft Movie has further solidified the trend of successful game adaptations in the film industry.

Recently, NBCUniversal released a press release mentioning Super Mario World as one of the upcoming films from Universal Pictures and Illumination that will be available on its Peacock streaming service.

The mention of Mario was quickly removed, indicating that it may have been included in error among other popular movie titles like Shrek, Minions, and Downton Abbey: The Grand Finale. This suggests that Super Mario World might not be the final title of the sequel, as it could have been a reference to the Mario movie IP in general.

However, Super Mario World could be a fitting title considering the events of the first Mario movie’s post-credits scene and the SNES game. The post-credits scene teased the debut of Yoshi, a character from the game, which could tie into the title Super Mario World, as it was in the game where Yoshi made his first appearance.

Additionally, the title could align with the upcoming Mario Kart game set to release with the Switch 2, named Mario Kart World. This accidental synergy could be a clever marketing strategy.

As we await confirmation of the sequel’s title, it will be interesting to see how audiences react to the film, especially after the hype surrounding the Minecraft Movie.
