Vote counting in Ireland’s general election begins on Saturday (November 30, 2024) with a close race predicted between the three main parties.

After voting ended on Friday (November 29, 2024), an exit poll showed Sinn Fein leading with 21.1% of the vote, followed closely by Fine Gael at 21.0%.

Fianna Fail, the centre-right partner of the outgoing coalition, trailed in third with 19.5%.

The counting process starts at 0900 GMT on Saturday with partial results expected throughout the day.

The final result may take days to determine due to Ireland’s proportional representation system.

The previous parliamentary term saw the rotation of Prime Minister between Fianna Fail and Fine Gael leaders, with the Green Party also part of the coalition.

The election campaign, triggered by a snap election call on November 8, focused on housing, cost-of-living, public spending, and immigration issues.

Both Fine Gael and Fianna Fail emphasized their pro-business and pro-EU stances, highlighting stability in the face of external challenges.

Sinn Fein, the largest opposition party, campaigned on housing policy and positioned itself as the alternative to the two main parties.

The election outcome could potentially result in Mary Lou McDonald becoming Ireland’s first female taoiseach.
