Vietnam Airlines launches wide-body service on Mumbai–Hanoi route, BA

Vietnam Airlines has commenced wide-body aircraft operations on its Mumbai–Hanoi route, deploying Boeing 787 and Airbus A350 jets for four weekly flights. The move reflects a significant capacity and service upgrade, aimed at catering to growing traffic between India and Vietnam.
The inaugural flight, which departed from Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on 30 April, was marked by a ceremonial celebration attended by officials from Vietnam Airlines, Aeroprime Group (its India GSA), and airport authorities. The deployment of long-haul aircraft is expected to enhance passenger experience with features such as lie-flat beds in business class, personalised entertainment systems, and meal options tailored to Indian preferences.
“This is a major step forward in our commitment to the Indian market,” said Nguyen Trung Hieu, Country Manager India at Vietnam Airlines. “The introduction of wide-body aircraft on this route will provide Indian travellers with elevated levels of comfort, convenience, and reliability.”
Vietnam Airlines currently operates 14 weekly services from India, connecting Delhi and Mumbai to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The new wide-body deployment on the Mumbai–Hanoi sector further strengthens its position in a highly competitive corridor. The carrier is also preparing to expand its Indian presence with the launch of direct flights from Bengaluru and Hyderabad starting in May 2025.
The upgraded service aligns with the broader trend of rising outbound travel from India to Southeast Asia, driven by growing leisure and business interest in destinations such as Vietnam. Travel sentiment is being shaped by greater awareness, competitive airfares, and increased visa facilitation.
Abhishek Goyal, CEO and Executive Director at Aeroprime Group, commented, “Vietnam has rapidly become a preferred outbound destination for Indian travellers. This fleet enhancement positions Vietnam Airlines well to absorb the increased demand while offering an elevated travel experience.”
