Use DeepSeek on iPhone? Your Data Might Already Be Stolen

The Risks of Using DeepSeek, the Chinese Generative AI App
DeepSeek, a new Chinese generative AI app, quickly rose to the top of the App Store charts after its January launch. However, concerns have been raised about its security and privacy practices.
NowSecure, a mobile security firm based in Chicago, conducted an analysis of DeepSeek’s iOS app and discovered major flaws. The app was found to collect and transmit a concerning amount of iPhone user data to servers in China.
Furthermore, DeepSeek was found to be using outdated encryption methods, specifically 3DES, which has known security weaknesses. The app also disables Apple’s App Transport Security (ATS), leaving user data vulnerable to interception.
While some may consider the collected data to be harmless, security experts warn that it can be used to de-anonymize users. Combining multiple data points over time can easily identify individuals.
It is crucial to prioritize data privacy and security when choosing and using apps. Avoid disclosing personal information, even to AI chatbots you trust, as it can be exploited to identify you.
Stay vigilant when downloading apps and learn how to protect yourself online to safeguard your data and privacy.
