The UN Security Council began closed-door consultations on the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, following concerns raised by Secretary-General Antonio Guterres about the situation reaching a critical point.
Pakistan, as a non-permanent member of the Security Council, requested closed consultations to address the situation at hand.
The meeting will be held in a consultations room adjacent to the UNSC Chamber, with Assistant Secretary-General Khaled Mohamed Khiari of Tunisia providing a briefing on behalf of the Departments of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs and Peace Operations.

After the meeting, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar Ahmad, may address reporters regarding the discussions.
Prior to the closed consultations, Secretary-General Guterres expressed his distress over the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan, emphasizing the need for maximum restraint to prevent a military confrontation.
He reiterated the UN’s readiness to support initiatives that promote de-escalation, diplomacy, and a renewed commitment to peace.
India’s former Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Syed Akbaruddin, highlighted that discussions led by a party to the conflict may not yield significant outcomes, as India aims to address the situation through dialogue and peaceful means.
In the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged with various UN Security Council members, emphasizing the importance of holding the perpetrators accountable for their actions.
Last week, Secretary-General Guterres reaffirmed his condemnation of the Pahalgam terror attack during conversations with Indian and Pakistani officials, stressing the need for justice and accountability through lawful means.
