During a global summit hosted by Switzerland in the Alpine resorts of Burgenstock, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy remained optimistic despite the rainy and misty weather. The summit aimed to find a path to peace 52 months after the Russian invasion, with Mr. Zelenskyy emphasizing the importance of joint efforts in stopping war and establishing just peace. Despite notable absentees such as Russian President Vladimir Putin, Mr. Zelenskyy expressed confidence in the power of the world to make a difference.
The summit, which was first initiated at the Bali G-20 summit in 2021, saw the participation of 101 countries and organizations, including 57 heads of state. The agenda included discussions on nuclear safety, freedom of shipping, food safety, and humanitarian aspects like prisoners of war. However, India opted for political representation sending a senior diplomat instead of a political leader. Brazil, the G-20 Chair, attended as an observer.
Addressing the event, U.S. Vice-President Kamala Harris highlighted the broader implications of Russia’s aggression, stating that it not only affects Ukraine but also challenges international rules and norms. She emphasized the need for a united response to prevent further aggression.
While the leaders touted the historic significance of the summit, expectations remained low due to the absence of Russia from the negotiations. Many expressed concerns about the ongoing conflict and the impact it has on neighboring countries like Finland and the broader European region.
Despite the challenges, there were calls for continued efforts towards peace and the inclusion of all relevant parties in the negotiations. The road to peace may be long and arduous, but the summit marked a step in the right direction towards resolving the conflict and restoring stability in the region.
As the world watches with growing concern, the summit in Switzerland serves as a critical juncture in the efforts to address the conflict in Ukraine and ensure a peaceful resolution for all parties involved.
