UK government launches AI assurance platform for enterprises
The UK government has launched an artificial intelligence (AI) assurance platform to assist businesses in identifying and mitigating potential risks associated with the technology. This initiative is part of a broader effort to strengthen the UK’s growing AI assurance sector.
With 524 firms currently operating in the UK’s AI assurance market, employing over 12,000 people and valued at more than £1bn, the government aims to raise awareness and drive demand for the sector. It anticipates the sector’s growth to reach around £6.5bn by 2035.
The platform was launched on 6 November 2024 and serves as a centralized hub for AI assurance, bringing together various tools, services, frameworks, and practices. It includes guidance on AI assurance techniques developed by the Department for Science, Innovation, and Technology (DSIT).
Businesses can utilize the platform to conduct impact assessments, evaluations, and review data used in AI systems for bias. This will help build trust in the technology’s everyday operations.
Digital Secretary Peter Kyle highlighted the potential of AI to enhance public services and boost the economy but emphasized the need to establish trust in these systems for widespread adoption.
DSIT plans to introduce new resources to the platform over time, such as an “AI Essentials toolkit” to simplify governance frameworks for industry understanding. An open consultation has been launched for the AI assurance self-assessment tool, known as AI Management Essentials (AIME).
The development of safe and responsible AI systems is a key focus for the UK government, aiming to create a competitive advantage in the field. The AI Safety Institute (AISI) will support this vision through initiatives like the Systemic AI Safety Grants programme.
Shared AI policies, standards and guidance
The AISI has partnered with Singapore to collaborate on AI safety research and develop shared policies, standards, and guidance. This partnership aims to promote AI safety for the public good and facilitate the widespread adoption of AI technology.
Global collaboration is essential for effective AI safety measures, as emphasized by the UK AISI chair Ian Hogarth. The agreement with Singapore marks the beginning of a long-term effort to advance AI safety research and promote responsible AI development.
