Ubisoft are adding offline modes to The Crew 2 and The Crew Motorfest after getting savaged over junking The Crew

When Ubisoft closed down its open world racing game The Crew in March by shutting off its servers, it marked the end of an era for the online-only game. In April, they even removed the game from players’ libraries and revoked their purchases, causing quite a stir among the gaming community. However, with the upcoming releases of The Crew 2 and The Crew Motorfest, Ubisoft is taking a different approach by including an offline mode to ensure long-term access to both titles.

Ubisoft recently announced on Xwitter that they are “currently exploring different solutions” and can confirm the inclusion of an offline mode in the new games. This move is likely a response to the backlash they faced when they discontinued the previous games. Additionally, PC Gamer reported that The Crew 2 is currently on sale for $1, making it a great deal for gamers.

Even when EA discontinued online servers for several Need For Speed games in 2021, players could still enjoy the games offline. However, The Crew 2 focuses heavily on its online features, so shutting down the servers may result in a less enjoyable experience for players even if the game remains playable.

In a review by John Walker (RPS), he described The Crew 2 as “an awful lot of not very much”, which raises concerns about the game’s future with the introduction of an offline mode. The lackluster multiplayer offerings and minimal co-op challenges in the game did not impress him either. This indicates that the game may struggle to maintain player engagement without significant updates or additions.

While I haven’t played The Crew 2 myself, I have dabbled in driving games within other popular titles like Fortnite and Warzone. These experiences have shown that the driving mechanics in games can greatly impact the overall enjoyment and replay value. As Ubisoft continues to navigate the challenges of balancing online and offline gameplay, it will be interesting to see how players respond to the changes in The Crew series.
