The U.S. Coast Guard revealed on Monday (September 17, 2024) that they monitored a fleet of Russian naval ships as they entered US waters off Alaska, reportedly to navigate around sea ice, a maneuver allowed by international regulations.

A crew onboard a US Coast Guard cutter observed the Russian military vessels breach the maritime boundary and travel 30 miles (48 kilometers) inside a region beyond US territorial waters, known as the US Exclusive Economic Zone.

The Russian fleet included two submarines, a frigate, and a tug boat, as per the Coast Guard’s announcement. The incident occurred approximately 60 miles (100 kilometers) northwest of Point Hope.

Rear Adm. Megan Dean emphasized that the Coast Guard is actively surveilling the maritime borders in the Bering Sea, Bering Strait, and Chukchi Sea to safeguard US sovereign interests, protect US fish stocks, and uphold maritime conventions.
