Trump says he is serious about Canada becoming 51st State

During an interview that aired on Sunday (February 9, 2025) before the Super Bowl preshow, President Donald Trump expressed his desire for Canada to become the 51st State. When asked by Fox News‘s Bret Baier if his talk of annexing Canada was serious, Mr. Trump responded affirmatively, stating that he believed Canada would benefit from becoming a U.S. state due to the alleged $200 billion annual loss incurred by the U.S. in trade with Canada.

However, it is important to note that the U.S. is not actually subsidizing Canada; rather, the trade deficit is largely influenced by America’s imports of Canadian energy and other commodities. Despite Mr. Trump’s repeated suggestions, the idea of Canada becoming a U.S. state is widely unpopular among Canadians.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau recently remarked that Mr. Trump’s interest in annexing Canada is linked to the U.S.’s desire for access to Canada’s natural resources. Mr. Trudeau also highlighted concerns about the U.S.’s commitment to military protection for Canada, stating that the U.S. cannot be relied upon for defense.

Mr. Trump further emphasized his stance on trade with Canada and Mexico, indicating that he has not seen sufficient action from both countries to address his tariff threats. He announced plans to impose tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada and Mexico, as well as reciprocal tariffs in the near future.

On a lighter note, Mr. Trump discussed his participation in the Super Bowl interview, noting that he believed it was beneficial for the country to have the president present at the game. He also signed a proclamation declaring February 9 as “the first ever Gulf of America Day” during his flight to New Orleans.

During the interview, Mr. Trump expressed support for Elon Musk’s efforts to improve government efficiency through his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). He defended Musk’s actions and predicted significant cost savings from identifying fraud and abuse within government agencies.

Lastly, Mr. Trump addressed his viral dancing videos on social media, stating that he sometimes feels compelled to dance despite trying to resist the urge. The interview concluded with Mr. Trump discussing his campaign promises and his administration’s initiatives.
