Trump Administration cuts may threaten AI research efforts

According to a report by Bloomberg, the Trump Administration has terminated several National Science Foundation employees who were selected for their expertise in AI, jeopardizing the agency’s ability to continue important AI research.

The Directorate for Technology, Innovation, and Partnerships within NSF, which played a key role in awarding government grants for AI projects, has been significantly impacted by these layoffs. This has resulted in the postponement or cancellation of many review panels, leading to delays in funding for various AI initiatives.

Criticism has been directed towards the Trump Administration for cutting back on scientific grant funding, particularly cuts influenced by Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency. AI pioneer and Nobel Laureate, Geoffrey Hinton, called for Musk to be expelled from the British Royal Society due to the negative impact he is having on scientific institutions in the U.S.

In response to Hinton’s criticism, Musk acknowledged that he may make mistakes but is committed to rectifying them.
