Top secret files which sunk with Bayesian yacht raided by MI6: report
A mission reminiscent of James Bond was reportedly conducted by UK intelligence service MI6 to retrieve highly sensitive secret files from safes aboard the sunken super-yacht Bayesian before Italian divers could access them.
The confidential documents were related to yacht owner Mike Lynch’s Darktrace cybersecurity company, which has contracts with UK, US, and Israeli intelligence agencies.
Italian sources revealed that MI6 agents removed sensitive computer equipment and data belonging to Lynch from the shipwreck before Italian divers began their recovery efforts.
The MI6 operation, unauthorized by Italian authorities, involved the removal of computers, hard drives, and encrypted devices from the sunken yacht.
The Bayesian, located 50 meters below the surface off the coast of Porticello, contained top-secret information that could be of interest to foreign governments.
Lynch, a tech tycoon with ties to Western intelligence, had advised British prime ministers on science, technology, and cyber security.
Italian prosecutors had ordered heightened security around the wreck, but MI6 agents reportedly extracted the data before their Italian counterparts could act.
Marine salvage experts initiated a $30 million operation to recover the wreck, funded by the yacht’s insurer.
Tragedy struck with the death of a Dutch diver involved in the salvage operation.
The sinking of the “unsinkable” ship was attributed to human error and a violent storm, resulting in the loss of 10 crew members and 12 guests.
Three crew members of the Bayesian are under investigation for negligence and recklessness related to the sinking.
No formal charges will be filed until the vessel is raised and examined, with manslaughter charges also a possibility.
The casualties included Lynch, his daughter, Manhattan lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife, and the ship’s chef.
Survivor Angela Bacares, Lynch’s wife, controls the company that owns the British-flagged vessel.
