The Outer Wilds developers are making a new game

This is a brief update as it is outside of regular office hours. Mobius Digital, the creators of the captivating virtual orrery and gravitational adventure game Outer Wilds, are working on a new game.

The announcement was casually slipped into an Outer Wilds update changelog. Here it is:

This minor patch is now available on Steam, with releases for other platforms (excluding Nintendo Switch) scheduled for late May. This patch mainly adds a few names to the credits and addresses two PC-specific bugs: issues with certain inputs being disabled when clicking out of the game (such as the ship’s lock on key), affecting streamers in particular, and faster-than-normal diagonal movement with mouse and keyboard.

Why stagger the releases in this way? It’s to ensure any bugs on Steam are caught and fixed before the game is released on other platforms. This is not a reflection on our QA testers, but a precaution as our new game is our top priority!

Following the usual list of additions and fixes, the changelog states that “there are no major updates planned for Outer Wilds or Echoes of the Eye as we are focused on our next game.”

So, what could their new game be about? Another space-themed adventure? More exploration of quantum mechanics and other elements of “post-classical” physics? The possibilities are intriguing. Thanks to reader Faxmachinen for bringing this to our attention.
