EA has officially announced that the upcoming Battlefield game will be set in a modern-day setting, returning to the popular themes of Battlefield 3 and Battlefield 4. This decision comes after exploring WWI, WWII, and near-future settings in previous games. Additionally, the first concept art for the game has been released.

In an interview with IGN, Vince Zampella, Head of Respawn & Group GM for EA Studios Organization, expressed the importance of returning to the core of what made Battlefield successful in the past. He stated, “If you look back to the peak of Battlefield, it’s that Battlefield 3… Battlefield 4 era where everything was modern. And I think we have to get back to the core of what Battlefield is and do that amazingly well, and then we’ll see where it goes from there.”

Battlefield 2042 had ambitious goals to innovate the series, such as introducing huge maps for up to 128 players and unique hero characters. However, feedback from fans highlighted issues with the large map sizes leading to unfocused gameplay. As a result, DICE made adjustments to support 64 players per map and reverted to a class system more in line with previous Battlefield games.

Zampella emphasized the importance of listening to core Battlefield players and regaining their trust. He mentioned, “The core Battlefield players know what they want. They’ve been with us forever, they’ve been amazing supporters. We need to earn their trust back and get them back on our side.”

EA is investing significant resources in the development of the next Battlefield game, with four studios collaborating on the project. EA CEO Andrew Wilson described it as one of the “most ambitious projects in [EA’s] history.”
