Tesla’s Optimus robots revealed to be human-controlled at “We, Robot” event
The Complexity of Autonomous Technology: Tesla’s “We, Robot” event created buzz among enthusiasts, shedding light on the challenges of developing truly autonomous robots and vehicles. The Cybercab faces regulatory hurdles before it can become mainstream, while the Optimus robots at the event were actually controlled by humans.
Tesla’s event showcased their latest advancements in autonomous technology, with the Optimus robots stealing the show at the afterparty. These robots interacted with guests, served drinks, and danced, but it was later revealed that they were operated by humans behind the scenes.
AI enthusiast Robert Scoble initially shared videos of the robots in action, but later disclosed that they were “remote assisted” by humans, as confirmed in a conversation with one of the operators.

The robots’ immediate responses, distinct voices, and matching gestures hinted at human control, rather than true AI autonomy. This revelation sparked discussions about the state of Tesla’s humanoid robotics program and the future capabilities of these robots.
Despite the use of human operators, attendees were not disappointed, viewing the event as a glimpse into potential future technologies rather than a showcase of current capabilities.

Elon Musk’s ambitious vision for the Tesla robot includes capabilities beyond just automation, envisioning them as companions with unique personalities that can assist with various tasks. While Musk aims for limited production of Optimus by 2025, the reliance on human control at the event suggests that fully autonomous humanoid robots may still be a work in progress.
Musk’s enthusiasm for the technology remains strong, with plans for over 1,000 robots potentially operational in Tesla factories by the end of 2025. However, the current need for human assistance raises questions about the timeline for achieving fully autonomous robots as envisioned by Tesla.
