Tech tariff exemptions are only temporary, according to Trump’s commerce secretary
U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick warns that the tech industry may still face new tariffs despite recent exemptions for consumer electronics like laptops and smartphones.
While the Trump administration has exempted certain tech products from tariffs for now, reports suggest that semiconductors could be targeted in the future.
In an interview with ABC’s “This Week,” Lutnick confirmed that semiconductors will be subject to special tariffs in the coming months to encourage domestic production.
Lutnick believes that manufacturing tech products in America is crucial for national security, but some doubt the feasibility of bringing such production back to the U.S.
President Trump has yet to provide a clear answer on the issue of semiconductor tariffs.
