TCL Nxtpaper 60 Hands On: My Favourite Smartphone Display

As a professional phone tester, I understand the significance of a high-quality display. A great display enhances the overall user experience, while a mediocre one can detract from it.
Surprisingly, my favorite displays are not found on popular brands like iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, or Google Pixel. They are actually on TCL phones that utilize the company’s Nxtpaper technology. Given that TCL is one of the largest TV manufacturers globally, it’s not surprising that their Nxtpaper devices excel in versatility.

One standout feature is the matt coating on the display, similar to the Xiaomi Pad 7 Matte Glass Version. This coating eliminates unwanted reflections often seen on glossy screens and ensures visibility in various lighting conditions, including direct sunlight.
Despite the matt screen, the regular color mode still delivers vibrant and rich colors typically associated with glossy displays, making it ideal for content consumption.

What sets TCL phones apart are the different display modes they offer. The ‘Colour Paper Mode’ reduces saturation for a softer, paper-like experience, while the ‘Ink Paper Mode’ switches to black and white for a more comfortable viewing experience. Additionally, the ‘Max Ink Mode’ conserves battery life by reducing the refresh rate while maintaining a monochrome display.

The ‘Max Ink Mode’ is particularly useful for reducing distractions, limiting the number of available third-party apps and creating a more focused environment. Even popular apps like TikTok and Instagram lose their appeal in this mode, promoting a healthier phone usage habit.
Users can easily switch between different display modes by using the ‘Nxtpaper key’ located on the side of the device, offering a customizable and user-friendly experience.
More than just a good screen?
Aside from the impressive display, the TCL 60 Nxtpaper boasts a 108Mp rear camera, MediaTek Helio G92 chipset, and a large 5200mAh battery. Priced at just €199, this phone could revolutionize the budget phone market.
Unfortunately, TCL currently has no plans to launch the phone in the UK or US, but hopefully, that will change in the near future.
For European customers, the £179.99 60 SE Nxtpaper 5G offers similar display modes but with a slightly lower display quality and camera specs. However, it still features the generous 5200mAh battery capacity.
The TCL 60 Nxtpaper has received recognition in Tech Advisor’s Best of MWC 2025 Awards, showcasing its potential in the market.
