System Shock 3 isn't dead, and we may hear more within a year

An update on the progress of System Shock 3 has surfaced, indicating that the project is still alive in some capacity. Nightdive Studios, the owners of the System Shock rights and known for remaking the first game, have hinted at a potential clarification on the status of System Shock 3 within a year. This news comes after Otherside handed over the project to Tencent in 2020, citing challenges as a smaller indie studio.

During a recent conference, Larry Kuperman, Nightdive’s director of business development, mentioned that the situation surrounding System Shock 3 is complex and that there are plans in place for what they control. Additionally, a remaster of System Shock 2 is on the horizon, with the possibility of a remake in the future. The remaster is set to launch in June, with potential for a remake of the second game thereafter.

While details about the future of the series remain vague, the prospect of new content beyond remasters is promising. Nightdive’s successful remake of the original System Shock has garnered praise for its faithfulness to the original design. The studio’s journey to acquiring the license and their plans for the future of the series are also explored in an interview.

On the other hand, Otherside, co-founded by System Shock’s original developers, is currently focused on a new immersive sim titled Thick As Thieves. The future of System Shock and the potential for a third installment remain uncertain but hopeful, with fans eagerly anticipating any developments in the franchise.
