Surprise! A Painkiller remake is coming later this year, but it'll be slightly different from how you remember it

The latest Future Games Show wasn’t focused on any specific game or studio, but interestingly, it showcased games from one developer at the beginning and end. The show kicked off with a preview of Lost Rift, a supernatural survival PvPvE extraction game developed by People Can Fly. This game was previously known as Project Victoria, which was put on hold just three months ago. Strangely, the show concluded with a remake of Painkiller, a series that put PCF on the map. However, this remake is being developed by Anshar Studios, known for assisting other developers on various projects including Baldur’s Gate 3, Silent Hill 2, and People Can Fly’s Outriders.

While both announcements technically come from the same developer, the original Painkiller was created by PCF, whereas the remake is in the hands of Anshar Studios. The remake promises to retain the essence of the original game with intense combat against numerous enemies, but it also introduces new elements such as four playable characters with unique abilities and a stronger focus on co-op gameplay. Additionally, players can expect features like tarot cards for buffs, in-game currencies, and unlockable skins, adding depth to the gameplay experience.

The Painkiller remake is set to release in Fall 2025, and it is already available for wishlist on Steam. With its updated features and nostalgic appeal, it seems like a promising title to look out for in the coming years. It’s clear that the gaming industry continues to revisit classic titles and breathe new life into them for modern audiences.
