Reports indicate that over 100 individuals lost their lives, and many others sustained injuries following an assault by the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces on a village in Gezira province, Sudan, on Wednesday.
The attack, carried out by the Rapid Support Forces on Wad al-Noura village in Gezira, resulted in casualties among women, children, and elderly individuals, as confirmed by Mini Arko Minawi, the governor of Darfur province.
A grassroots organization established to safeguard residents in Wad Madani, the capital of Gezira, reported on social media late Wednesday that the paramilitary group used heavy artillery to besiege and attack the village. This force has been engaged in conflict with the Sudanese army for over a year.
The Madani Resistance Committee, previously targeted by the RSF, accused the paramilitaries of pillaging Wad al-Noura during the assault that commenced on Wednesday morning.
In December, the RSF asserted control over Wad Madani, located approximately 100 kilometers southeast of Khartoum, the Sudanese capital, which serves as a sanctuary for numerous individuals displaced by ongoing conflicts.
The resistance committee stated that the RSF invaded the village, displacing its inhabitants, including women and children, to other areas within the al-Manaqil district.
The transitional government of Sudan condemned the attacks in a statement on its Telegram channel, urging the international community to hold the RSF accountable for their actions.
The RSF claimed on X that the Sudanese military was planning an assault on its troops in Jabal al-Awliya, situated in the western region of the al-Manaqil district, by mobilizing forces from three bases. The validity of this claim could not be confirmed by The Associated Press.
The paramilitary group disclosed that it engaged in clashes with the Sudanese army by attacking three camps surrounding Wad-al Noura in different directions.
In their statement, the RSF affirmed their commitment to confronting any movements or gatherings by the enemy and vowed to pursue and defeat them.
The ongoing conflict between the RSF and the Sudanese army has inflicted significant damage on the nation, leading to widespread clashes and placing the population at risk of famine. The death toll has exceeded 14,000 individuals, with thousands more sustaining injuries and hundreds of thousands being displaced.
