Splitgate 2 adds factions, time powers to the portal shooter

Popular multiplayer game Splitgate is making a comeback with the announcement of Splitgate 2 by 1047 Games. The sequel, set for release in 2025, has been completely rebuilt to introduce new faction-based portal gameplay.

Splitgate gained unexpected success in 2021, blending Halo-style first-person shooting with portal mechanics. The game focuses on strategic positioning rather than just shooting skills, attracting over 600,000 downloads in its first week and 22 million overall. After announcing the end of support in 2022, the studio revealed plans for a new project that deviates from the “Halo meets Portal” concept.

The cinematic trailer for Splitgate 2 showcases fighters with familiar weapons and portals, as well as different playstyles representing the new factions. Players can choose from Aeros for speed and agility, Meridian for time manipulation, and Sabrask for strength and firepower, combining them in 4v4 matches for strategic gameplay.

The game has received a significant technical upgrade, with CEO Ian Proulx stating that Splitgate 2 has been designed in Unreal Engine 5 by a team of industry experts to deliver a top-tier shooter experience. Unlike traditional sequels, players do not need to have played the original game to enjoy the sequel.

Development of Splitgate 2 has been ongoing for a few years, aiming to create a long-lasting and relevant game. With $100 million in investor funding, the future looks promising for the franchise.

While Splitgate 2 is not coming out this year, players can wishlist it on various platforms including PC, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, and PlayStation 4.
