So, Danny DeVito wants to be Wario – but is he really the best fit for Mario’s gassy counterpart?

Years ago, when news started circulating that a live-action Pokemon movie was in the works, and it turned out to be a Detective Pikachu film, everyone quickly rallied behind the idea that Danny DeVito was the perfect choice to play the titular electric mouse. However, the role ultimately went to Ryan Reynolds, who brought his signature sarcastic charm to the character and delivered a genuinely funny film. Many of us may still harbor a slight bitterness that the Always Sunny in Philadelphia actor didn’t land the role, but fear not, dear reader, as there may be new possibilities on the horizon.

Last week, the iconic actor sat down with The Movie Dweeb for an interview promoting his latest film, Poolman, where he was asked about the potential of portraying none other than Wario in a future Super Mario Bros Movie sequel. DeVito responded, “You never know what could happen in this world. I’m open to a lot of things. I’m ready to take on new challenges and roles.” He humorously added, “Let them know that I’m ready to give it my all and that I should be in that movie.”

While some may consider it a conventional choice, I stand firm in my belief that DeVito would be a joy to watch in any role, especially as Wario. This also sparks the question – who would be the Waluigi to Danny DeVito’s Wario? The Daisy to Anya Taylor-Joy’s Peach? Is there an actor who could truly embody Yoshi’s essence? While I may not have all the answers, here are my picks for some of these beloved Mario characters (even if not all of them make it to future films).

Waluigi – Tim Robinson

In my opinion, Waluigi needs to be portrayed as a foolish yet seasoned character – after all, how else could he amass such wealth? To balance this, I believe Waluigi should exude a certain naivete towards the world, and I can’t think of anyone better suited for the role than Tim Robinson from I Think You Should Leave. With his impeccable comedic timing and ability to portray characters who seem unaware of their surroundings, Robinson would be a perfect fit for Waluigi.

Yoshi – Robert Pattinson

Now, before you dismiss the idea, consider this – Robert Pattinson as Yoshi. Yes, it may sound unconventional, but hear me out. Pattinson’s performance as the Heron in Studio Ghibli’s The Boy and the Heron showcases his ability to embrace eccentricity, a quality essential for bringing Yoshi to life. While few live-action actors excel in vocal performances, I trust Pattinson to deliver a memorable portrayal of the tax-evading dinosaur.

Princess Daisy – Zendaya

Let’s face it, Zendaya as Princess Daisy just feels like a natural fit. With her star power, prior voice acting experience, and undeniable talent, she embodies the essence of Daisy. I include this prediction for future reference, so I can proudly say “I called it” and earn some internet points, or whatever the current trend may be.

Bowser Jr. – A rising child actor with a promising future

It only makes sense for our mischievous Bowser Jr. to be voiced by a young talent. While there may not be many well-known child actors in the industry, the trajectory often involves sudden popularity followed by periods of obscurity. Perhaps the role will be taken by a child who emerges as the next big star, thanks to sheer talent or industry connections. Alternatively, they may just cast Jack Black’s actual child for the role.

The possibility of DeVito portraying Wario remains uncertain, as the casting choices for the movie could surprise us once again. It’s unlikely to see a Mario movie inundated with actors from Always Sunny in Philadelphia, but the mere thought of a DeVito-led Wario is enough to fuel our imaginations, much like the anticipation we had for Detective Pikachu.
