Sleeping in the cold – 5 tips to keep you safe and warm

Published

on

As a young adventurer in the 80s, I felt invincible after climbing a few peaks. However, a spontaneous trip to Romania changed everything when my friend mentioned Moldoveanu, their highest peak. The next day, we embarked on a winter hike from Balea Lac to Moldoveanu, unprepared for the cold.

Halfway on the ridge trail, night fell, and we realized we were in a serious situation. Our flimsy tents and sleeping bags were no match for the cold winds from Moldoveanu. Shivering in fear of freezing to death, we survived the night with frostbites and blue fingers, unable to reach the summit.

Reflecting on this experience, I gathered safety tips for sleeping in the cold from an experienced camper. These tips could have saved us from our ordeal.

Stay Safe – Tips for Sleeping in the Cold

Here are the tips to ensure a safe night’s sleep in cold weather:

Tip 1: Warm sleeper is the dry sleeper

Change into dry clothes before sleeping to prevent sweat from making you cold during the night.

Ensure you have an extra set of clothes in your backpack to change into.

Tip 2: Have a pot of something warm before you go to sleep

Enjoy a warm beverage before bedtime to stay warm without inducing sweating.

Tip 3: Nightcaps are a huge no-no

Avoid alcohol before sleeping as it can interfere with your body temperature regulation.

Tip 4: Get some good sleeping gear
