SITA acquires CCM to redesign airport spaces with advanced technology, ET TravelWorld

As airports worldwide invest heavily in automation, biometrics, and self-service technology, the design and layout of terminal spaces must evolve accordingly. The traditional approach, featuring static check-in counters and inefficient passenger flows, no longer meets the demands of modern travel. In response to this challenge, SITA, the global leader in air transport technology, today announced the acquisition of CCM, an acclaimed Italian design firm renowned for its expertise in creating high-quality airport interiors.

This strategic acquisition marks a significant step in SITA’s efforts to redefine airport spaces by seamlessly blending technology with intelligent design. CCM has long been recognised for its collaborations with leading architects to deliver functional and stylish airport environments, ensuring efficiency without compromising passenger experience.

David Lavorel, CEO of SITA, commented, “This isn’t just about expanding airports—it’s about reimagining them. By integrating CCM’s design expertise with our technology solutions, we’re transforming airport terminals into smarter, more flexible spaces that optimise passenger flow, maximise existing footprints, and evolve with the industry’s needs.”

SITA’s passenger processing and airport operations expertise will now be complemented by CCM’s mastery in space optimisation. As travel habits shift, airport layouts must reflect these changes, prioritising seamless integration of technology, such as self-service kiosks and biometric systems, into the overall design. Lavorel added, “Building efficient, tech-enabled environments is crucial for the future of travel. Airports are not just transit points; they are a key part of the journey itself.”

Sergio Colella, President of Europe at SITA, explained, “Technology and design must work hand in hand to create smarter, more adaptable airport environments. By joining forces with CCM, we can offer a unique, end-to-end solution—from design conception to operations—ensuring airports are ready for the future of travel.”

For over 35 years, CCM has designed terminal spaces at more than 300 airports worldwide, focusing on efficiency and passenger satisfaction. With SITA’s expertise in AI-driven airport operations and baggage handling, this acquisition creates an unparalleled ability to integrate design with technology.

Monica Oberti, interim CEO of CCM, said, “Now, airports no longer have to choose between efficiency and passenger experience. Together with SITA, we bring the best of both worlds—smart technology and intelligent design—to reshape airports for the future.”
