Significant Winter Storm Continues to Sweep the East Coast

The East Coast is currently being hit by a sprawling storm that is bringing a mix of rain, snow, sleet, and freezing rain. After causing havoc in Kentucky and Tennessee, the storm is expected to continue its path of destruction into Monday. Power outages, fallen trees, and dangerous road conditions are anticipated, potentially disrupting daily life and travel plans.
Meteorologist Bob Oravec has labeled this system as a “high-impact storm,” with the most severe weather predicted for the Northeast. Heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain are expected in this region. While precipitation is forecast to ease off on Sunday afternoon, the storm will persist, bringing damaging winds of up to 70 miles per hour and continued snowfall over the Great Lakes through late Monday and even into Tuesday.
In the Northeast, the snow is forecasted to transition into sleet and freezing rain by Sunday night. The Weather Prediction Center warns of potential ice accumulations up to a quarter inch, making driving conditions hazardous.
New York City and Boston are expected to see a change from snow to rain. Powerful winds are also predicted to develop along the East Coast and into the Appalachians and Ohio Valley, with wind warnings issued across the region.
A blizzard warning is in effect for the Allegheny Mountains from Sunday afternoon until Monday afternoon.
Sunday afternoon will bring strong winds to New York City, with meteorologist Bob Oravec warning of windy conditions due to the city’s building structures funneling the winds.
This storm is ushering in bitterly cold Arctic air from Canada, leading to record-low temperatures in some areas. The cold snap will set the stage for the next winter storm expected to hit the Central Plains, Mid-Atlantic, and Northeast in the coming days.
The worst of the flooding is over but the storm continues.
Warm, springlike moisture caused severe flooding in the Ohio and Tennessee Valleys and lower Mississippi Valley on Saturday. Governor Andy Beshear of Kentucky has requested an emergency disaster declaration, while Governor Patrick Morrisey of West Virginia declared a state of emergency in 10 counties.
Washington is expected to experience heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds on Sunday. Temperatures will also see a significant drop from the mid-60s to the 30s overnight.
Snowfall is predicted to spread across the Northeast, with upstate New York, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, and Maine likely to receive the heaviest snowfall. By Monday morning, the storm will move towards Maine and southeast Canada before heading northeast into the Atlantic Ocean.
The East Coast will see a brief respite from the storm, but snow is expected to return on Tuesday and Wednesday in Tennessee and Kentucky. The Northeast and Mid-Atlantic may also see snowfall by Thursday.
