Sightful Cancels Headless AR Workstation ‘Spacetop’, Pivots to Windows AR Software
Sightful Cancels Spacetop G1 Project
Sightful, the hardware startup known for its innovative ‘headless AR laptop’ concept, has announced the cancellation of its highly anticipated $1,900 Spacetop G1 device.
The Spacetop G1, which was unveiled in May as the company’s first commercial product, was set to revolutionize the market with its unique design. However, citing challenges in competing with major players like Microsoft and its neural processing units (NPU) integrated into Surface laptops, Sightful has made the decision to scrap the project entirely. Pre-order customers will be offered refunds for their $100 deposits.
Instead, Sightful is shifting its focus towards developing software for Windows laptops that will offer a similar AR experience. This software, set to launch in early 2025, will run on Windows apps and integrate with Microsoft’s CoPilot AI features. Initially, it will be compatible with Xreal AR glasses via USB-C, with the possibility of expanding to other AR glasses in the future.
Mac support is expected to follow the initial launch, and there are plans to extend the software beyond laptops to other devices such as TVs and phones, although specific timelines have not been provided yet.
