Shiftall Opens Pre-orders for 'MeganeX superlight' Ultra High-Resolution OLED PC VR Headset

Shiftall has recently opened pre-orders for the MeganeX superlight 8K, a sleek and lightweight PC VR headset with high-resolution OLED display, tracked by SteamVR base stations.

Despite Panasonic selling off Shiftall earlier this year, both companies came together for a press conference in Tokyo to introduce the MeganeX superlight 8K. The headset is expected to ship between February and March 2025 and is currently available for pre-order in the US at a price of $1,900.

The MeganeX Superlight 8K features 1.35-inch micro OLED displays with a resolution of 3,552 × 3,840 per-eye and a refresh rate of 90 Hz. It also supports 10-bit color depth and HDR through SteamVR.

Weighing only 185g (without headstrap), the headset includes proprietary pancake lenses from Panasonic, motorized interpupillary distance (IPD) adjustment from 58 to 72 mm, and focus adjustment from 0D to -7D.

Other features of the MeganeX superlight 8K include built-in dual microphones with beamforming and 6DOF head tracking enabled by SteamVR base stations. An option for prescription lenses will be available in the future.

Although the MeganeX superlight 8K does not have onboard audio, it offers a USB Type-C expansion port for headphones.

Initially available in Japan and the US, the MeganeX superlight 8K targets PC VR enthusiasts who appreciate high-quality displays. Comparisons can be drawn to Bigscreen Beyond, which features lower-resolution micro OLED displays at a lower price point and weight.

Similar to its predecessors, MeganeX superlight 8K is designed for use within the SteamVR ecosystem, requiring users to provide their own controllers and tracking base stations. Pre-orders can be placed in the US for $1,900.
