Shein app relaunches in India with Reliance partnership

Shein, the Chinese fast-fashion platform, has made a comeback in India after a five-year hiatus, partnering with Reliance Retail, a local conglomerate owned by billionaire Mukesh Ambani. This move comes ahead of Shein’s upcoming listing and marks its return to one of Asia’s largest retail markets through the launch of the new Shein India Fast Fashion app.
The partnership with Reliance comes with strict conditions, giving Reliance full control over operations and data. Shein will function solely as a technology partner, with Reliance retaining ownership of the platform. All customer data must be stored in India, and Shein will not have access rights.
This collaboration signifies a shift in Reliance’s strategy, as it typically incorporates brands like Muji into its Ajio fashion app. By adding Shein to its portfolio, Reliance aims to strengthen its presence in the e-commerce sector in India.
While Reliance is a major player in retail and telecom in India, it faces tough competition from Flipkart, Amazon, and other quick commerce firms. Shein is rolling out its delivery service in select cities initially and plans to expand nationwide soon, offering products designed and manufactured in India.
The approval for Shein’s return is a rare exception to India’s ban on Chinese apps, with stringent oversight measures in place to ensure data security and sovereignty. The arrangement aims to boost India’s textile manufacturing sector while safeguarding data.
Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal highlighted the extensive vetting process by multiple ministries for the approval, emphasizing the importance of maintaining data sovereignty. The partnership between Shein and Reliance marks a significant development in India’s e-commerce landscape.
