Seven Signs You are Suffering from Travelers Fatigue

Published

on

Traveling long term can take a toll on you. After a few months on the road, it starts to feel like work and many people experience travel fatigue.

Once you’ve been traveling for a while, the initial excitement wears off and you’re left feeling just plain tired.

Every day is filled with one sightseeing attraction, temple visit, trek, or museum tour after another. Sometimes, after weeks of being a constant tourist, all you want to do is lie down and take a nap.

Signs You Are Suffering From Travel Fatigue

It can feel quite odd when you’re in a foreign country and other travelers are heading out in the morning for tours and sightseeing.

You feel like you should be doing something too, but you just can’t find the motivation, so you give in to the fatigue and take some time off from traveling.
Here are some signs that Dave and I noticed indicating we might be experiencing traveler’s fatigue…

1. Don’t Care About the Top Sites Anymore

A Rooftop View of the Taj Mahal

For example: You visit the Taj Mahal, but it’s cold, misty, and foggy for three days straight.

You’re not interested. You don’t even bother going inside. Instead, you opt for the only heated spot in town… the coffee shop.

2. You Skip The Top Tourist Attraction

Shopping at the mall

For example: You have the chance to see the amazing Amber Palace in Jaipur, India…

Instead, you choose to go to the mall, stroll around, and buy some socks.

3. Had Enough of Local Food and Traditions

For example: Your hotel offers traditional food and live music on their rooftop restaurant.

It has everything you’d want for a night out in India…

You opt for Pizza Hut instead. Not just once, but twice.

4. Skip the Must do Tours

A night in watching “Sherlock Holmes”

Not far from town, there’s a village with dancers, artists, and local cuisine. They offer evening tours to visit the village.

You decide to stay in bed and stream “Sherlock Holmes” with Robert Downey Jr. on your computer’s free wifi.

 5. Skip the City Tours

Relaxing in the hotel

For example: You have two days in Delhi before your flight. It’s nice weather outside, not too cold, and the sun is shining. You’re close to the city’s top attractions…

You order room service and flip between HBO and the BBC

6. Cut Short Your Trip

For example: You had plans to travel to Varanasi in central India and then all the way to Calcutta…

Instead, you buy a last-minute ticket to escape to Sri Lanka for a month.

7. Throw the Budget out the Window

Example: You’re on a tight budget and going over it would mean not having enough money to continue your trip. The last thing you want to do is rely on your credit cards, but you can’t handle backpacking anymore.

You’ve decided to forget about the budget and you’re feeling content.

Time to relax on the beach and enjoy your travels in style. It’s the only way to reignite your passion for traveling.

After a month of indulging in luxury and yes, overspending, we’re gearing up to get back to backpacking in India.

8. Excitement of Travel is Gone

We’ve overcome our traveler’s fatigue. All it took was a few days lounging in the sand, playing in the waves, and unwinding by the pool. That’s how you beat travel fatigue. Take a break from traveling for a while and then dive back in.
