Setting Intentions, Not Just Resolutions
As the clock strikes midnight on December 31st, there is a sense of collective ambition in the air to make the upcoming year one to remember. We rush to set resolutions and firm goals, such as losing weight, saving money, reading more, or learning a new skill. However, as time passes, many resolutions tend to be forgotten. The problem with resolutions is that they often stem from a sense of obligation rather than true desire.
This is where setting intentions, rather than resolutions, can make a significant impact on personal growth.
While resolutions are specific and concrete, intentions focus more on the journey itself – they represent the values and principles that guide us. They are less about measurable achievements and more about the quality of our experiences. For instance, instead of aiming to “lose 10 pounds,” an intention could be to “nurture a healthier relationship with my body and mind.” This shift in perspective opens up a broader path.
Living by your intentions involves making daily choices that align with them. It requires a constant return to what you aspire to embody. It also involves forgiveness and flexibility – some days will be better than others, but the intention remains a guiding force.
Intentions are effective because they are adaptable. They do not set a strict target but provide a direction to move towards.
So, how can we establish intentions?
Setting intentions begins with introspection. It entails delving deep to comprehend what truly holds significance for us.
Here are some steps to assist you in this process:
- Reflect on the past year and pinpoint what brought you joy and fulfillment.
- Consider how you want to feel in the upcoming year. What emotions come to mind? Peaceful, connected, adventurous?
- Based on these reflections, create intentions that resonate with these desired feelings. For example, “I intend to embrace new experiences with an open heart,” or “I intend to cultivate peace in my daily life.”
- Write down your intentions and place them somewhere visible.
- Regularly check in with yourself. Are your actions in line with your intentions? What adjustments can you make?
Setting intentions is essentially a mindfulness practice. This year, let’s move away from strict resolutions and embrace the gentle power of intentions. It’s not about ticking off tasks on a list, but about how you choose to live each day and the person you aspire to be. ♡
