Scores of Civilians Killed by Government Forces in Syria, War Monitors Say

A recent report from two war monitoring groups has revealed that three days of clashes between fighters aligned with Syria’s new leaders and those loyal to the deposed dictator Bashar al-Assad have resulted in numerous civilian casualties. The British-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that over 500 people, including more than 300 civilians, have been killed in the coastal provinces of Tartus and Latakia, with many of the civilian deaths attributed to government forces. Meanwhile, the Syrian Network for Human Rights stated that government security forces have killed around 125 civilians, showing no distinction between civilians and combatants.

In response to these allegations, Information Ministry officials denied the accusations of civilian killings and emphasized the government’s commitment to conducting thorough investigations and holding accountable those responsible for harming civilians. They maintained that Syrian forces adhere to strict standards of international humanitarian law and prioritize the protection of civilians during operations.

The recent escalation of violence marks the deadliest outbreak since the ousting of the Assad regime by rebels in early December. It poses a significant challenge to the new government’s authority and raises concerns about the potential for a larger sectarian conflict in Syria, already fraught with tensions from the ongoing civil war.

Despite the grim situation, there are efforts being made to provide assistance to the wounded. The Syrian Red Crescent has been granted permission to enter one of the affected towns to evacuate and provide aid to the injured.
