Russian President Vladimir Putin has suggested restarting direct talks with Ukraine in Istanbul on May 15, “without preconditions,” in response to calls for a 30-day ceasefire or face further sanctions. Putin referred to the failed peace talks in March and proposed restarting them without preconditions during his remarks to reporters.
“We are committed to serious negotiations with Ukraine,” Putin stated, leaving open the possibility of agreeing to a ceasefire during direct talks with Ukraine.
This proposal comes after leaders from France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Poland threatened to increase pressure on Moscow if it does not accept the unconditional 30-day ceasefire they offered. The proposal for a ceasefire starting on May 12, 2025, was supported by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has expressed readiness for peace talks but insists on a ceasefire first. Putin mentioned several previous ceasefire proposals by Russia, all of which Ukraine claims were violated.
Putin accused Ukraine of sabotaging previous initiatives and launching attacks on Russia. He emphasized the need for a ceasefire that would lead to lasting peace and said he would speak to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to facilitate peace talks on May 15.
European leaders joined Zelenskyy in Kyiv, calling for an unconditional 30-day ceasefire to allow for diplomatic efforts to end the war. They threatened massive sanctions if Russia violates the truce.
The leaders also discussed security guarantees for Ukraine and the possibility of deploying foreign troops as a deterrent against Russia.
Recent Russian attacks in Ukraine have resulted in casualties, prompting concerns of further violence. The U.S. Embassy in Kyiv issued a warning of a potential Russian air attack, adding to the tension in the region.
Despite ongoing efforts to reach a peace deal, skepticism remains high, and the situation in Ukraine remains volatile. Pressure is mounting to find ways to support Ukraine militarily and secure its future.
