Roughriders’ defence pivotal in beating Winnipeg Blue Bombers - Winnipeg

The Saskatchewan Roughriders bounced back with a 19-9 win against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on Friday.

After suffering their first loss of the CFL season to the B.C. Lions, the Riders improved to 5-1 while the Bombers dropped to 2-5. The victory halted Winnipeg’s two-game winning streak.

The game’s only touchdown came in the third quarter when quarterback Shea Patterson led a drive resulting in a 15-yard touchdown pass to running back Clint Ratkovich, giving the Riders a 13-6 lead.

Later, Riders linebacker Adam Auclair intercepted a pass from Winnipeg’s Zach Collaros, leading to another scoring opportunity for Saskatchewan.

A 34-yard completion to rookie receiver Ajou Ajou set up a 31-yard field goal by Brett Lauther, extending the Riders’ lead to 16-6 in the fourth quarter.

Although the Bombers narrowed the gap with a field goal, the Riders sealed the win with another field goal from Lauther, making it 19-9.

A minor scuffle erupted at the end of the game, but the Riders held on for the victory.

Both teams struggled offensively in the first half, relying mostly on field goals for scoring.

Looking ahead, the Blue Bombers will face the Toronto Argonauts, while the Roughriders will take on the Montreal Alouettes.
