Residents ransack Guinea chimpanzee center after animal kills infant

Chimpanzee Attacks Prompt Violence Near Research Center in Guinea

Following an incident where a woman claimed a chimpanzee killed her infant, residents living near a chimpanzee research center in Guinea launched an attack on the facility, according to the center’s management.

The enraged crowd vandalized the building, destroying equipment such as drones, computers, and over 200 documents, as reported by the center’s managers.

Reports from eyewitnesses indicated that the violent reaction stemmed from the discovery of an infant’s mutilated body nearly two miles away from the Nimba Mountains Nature Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Seny Zogba, the child’s mother, recounted the terrifying experience to Reuters, stating that while working in a cassava field, a chimpanzee attacked her from behind, biting her and snatching her baby into the forest.

Local ecologist Alidjiou Sylla expressed concerns about the decreasing food sources in the reserve, leading to chimpanzees venturing out more frequently and escalating the risk of attacks.

The research center documented six chimpanzee-human attacks within the reserve since the beginning of the year.

A local ecologist said the dwindling supply of food in the reserve was pushing the animals to leave the protected area more frequently.
