Quest v67 Update Rolls Out Soon with Big Improvements to Multitasking

Quest users have been eager for an improved way to manage windowed content to enhance web browsing and 2D app usage. While users on the Public Test Channel (PTC) have had access to this feature since late June, starting next week, everyone will be able to customize window placement with the rollout of v67.

Update (July 4th, 2024): Meta has announced that the update will begin rolling out the week of July 8th, reaching Quest 2/3/Pro. This update allows users to arrange up to three panels in a new “hinged” layout and place up to three additional panels anywhere on the screen. The new flexible window feature can be found under Experimental in Settings once the update is live.

The update also introduces a ‘Theater View’ button on the control bar, enabling users to automatically expand a panel’s size and dim surrounding content.

In addition, Meta is introducing Swipe Typing, allowing users to slide their finger or cursor across letters to spell words. This feature can be accessed through Settings, then System, then Keyboard, and selecting the toggle next to Swipe Typing.

Another exciting addition for Quest 3 users is the new Wi-Fi QR code scanner, enabling users to scan a QR code directly in-headset. This feature can be accessed through Settings, then Wi-Fi, and tapping Scan QR Code.

Original Article (June 25th, 2024): XR enthusiast and data miner Luna discovered that the PTC has provided early access to the headset’s v67 update, which includes a new experimental feature for more flexible window placement, drawing inspiration from Vision Pro.

Watch the feature in action below:

Meta initially introduced multitasking support in early 2020, allowing users to place multiple windows in three docks. Luna points out that, in the early access release, windowed content is limited to three docked panels and three freely placeable panels, offering more flexibility for setting up a virtual home office.

Additionally, a new virtual keyboard feature will allow users to place the keyboard vertically or at an angle for easier typing.

To access these features before the stable release, you’ll need to enroll in the PTC. If you haven’t already, follow this guide provided by Meta.

To sign up for Quest PTC eligibility from the mobile app:

  1. Open the mobile app, tap Menu in the bottom-right corner, then tap Devices.
  2. Tap Headset settings, then tap Advanced settings.
  3. Tap the toggle next to Public Test Channel to attempt to join Quest PTC.

    • If the toggle is unresponsive, Quest PTC is currently at full capacity and not available.

Once enrolled, as Luna suggests, navigate to Settings > Experimental Features > New Window Layout, and toggle the feature on to activate it.

If you’re on PTC and haven’t received these features yet, make sure to check regularly as Meta typically does gradual rollouts of both early access and stable OS updates.
