Quest 3S vs Quest 3: The No-nonsense Recommendation

According to data from Amazon US, Quest headsets did not perform as well during Black Friday and Cyber Monday 2024 compared to 2023.

The data shows that in 2023, approximately 170,000 Quest headsets were sold in the 30-day period surrounding Black Friday and Cyber Monday. In contrast, in 2024, the number dropped to around 146,000 Quest headsets, indicating a 14% decrease in sales volume. It is important to note that this data may not be reflective of sales from other retailers.

This outcome comes as a surprise considering Meta’s recent launch of the improved Quest 3S, a significant price reduction on the Quest 3, and the availability of a flagship game featuring a popular IP (Batman: Arkham Shadow) in time for Black Friday.

During the 2023 holiday season, Meta was still selling the older Quest 2 headset. The Black Friday deal that year on the most popular version of the headset (128GB) was priced at just $250 with a $50 gift card, effectively making the headset cost only $200.

Interestingly, this deal proved to be more appealing at the time than the 2024 deal where Meta was promoting the Quest 3S (128GB) model for $300 with a $75 gift card, essentially making it a $225 purchase.

While the $25 price difference may seem minimal, the Quest 3S offers significantly more value. However, other factors such as broader economic conditions, competition from other products, and shifts in interest towards VR technology also play a significant role.

In terms of sales ratio between Quest 3S and Quest 3 during this year’s Black Friday and Cyber Monday, the headsets were sold at a ratio of around 3:1, similar to the ratio between Quest 2 and Quest 3 in 2023.
