Vladimir Putin has pledged to strengthen trade and security ties with North Korea, independent of Western influence. In a letter published by North Korean state media, Putin expressed his commitment to building alternative mechanisms for trade and mutual settlements that are not controlled by the West. He also emphasized the importance of creating a security architecture in Eurasia that is equal and indivisible.

Putin thanked North Korea for its support of Russia’s military operation in Ukraine and assured Pyongyang of his unwavering backing against U.S. pressure and threats. The letter was released ahead of Putin’s upcoming visit to North Korea, the first in 24 years.

During the visit, Russia and North Korea are expected to sign a partnership agreement that includes security cooperation. The agreement is aimed at furthering cooperation in various fields and addressing security concerns.

Russian Defence Minister Andrei Belousov, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, and Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak will accompany Putin on the visit. There are indications that North Korea may be preparing for a military parade in Pyongyang.

The United States has accused North Korea of supplying ballistic missiles and munitions to Russia for use in Ukraine. However, both Moscow and Pyongyang have denied these allegations.

North Korea, officially known as the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK), has been under U.N. sanctions for its nuclear and missile programs. Russia and China have called for easing sanctions on North Korea, while the U.S. has pushed for more stringent measures.
