Putin Has Long Wanted More Power in Europe. Trump Could Grant It.

President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia startled attendees at the 2007 Munich security conference by calling for a new balance of power in Europe that would reduce American influence and favor Moscow.

Although his demands were not met at the time, nearly two decades later, officials from President Trump’s administration hinted at a potential alignment with Russia, raising concerns among conference participants.

Analysts warn that such a shift could give Mr. Putin a significant victory, surpassing any gains in Ukraine.

Andrew S. Weiss, from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, highlighted the Kremlin’s long-standing desire to diminish American influence in Europe and suggested that Mr. Putin would capitalize on any opportunities presented by the new administration.

The presence of American troops in Western Europe has been crucial for maintaining peace since World War II. However, recent remarks by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and Vice President JD Vance hinted at a possible shift in U.S. policy towards Europe.

Mr. Vance criticized European nations for suppressing far-right parties and suggested that such parties should be allowed to thrive as a reflection of the people’s will.

Mr. Vance’s comments align with the Kremlin’s strategy of supporting right-wing parties in Europe to weaken the continent.

Moscow aims to drive a wedge between the U.S. and Europe to increase its own influence in the region.

Mr. Putin’s strategic moves are beginning to yield benefits as the U.S. administration under Mr. Trump takes actions that align with Moscow’s interests.

The changing dynamics in Europe, coupled with the evolving relationship between the U.S. and Russia, pose significant challenges for European leaders.

The Kremlin has scored several victories since Mr. Trump’s return to office, raising concerns among European leaders about the future of the continent’s security.

Mr. Trump’s influence on resolving the conflict in Ukraine could have far-reaching implications for Europe’s security landscape.
