Pure Rock Crawling looks like a knockabout MudRunner without the mud
Pure Rock Crawling is all about navigating off-road vehicles through rough, rocky terrain. It requires precise control of the gas pedal and steering wheel to move forward and conquer obstacles. With a straightforward approach likely due to being developed by a solo developer, this game launched last October and has recently caught my attention with the addition of a new map.
The Steam page highlights key features such as realistic soft body physics on tires, customizable suspension settings, and a variety of terrains to explore freely. The latest map, Ghost Mine, is based on assets created using photogrammetry from a trip to Death Valley.
Initially released in Early Access in April 2018, Pure Rock Crawling reached version 1.0 in October 2024. Despite not being on my radar before, the game continues to receive updates post-launch.
Reminiscent of my enjoyment of Spintires a decade ago, I find satisfaction in overcoming obstacles whether driving a big rig or a dirt bike in games like Trials. While I’m not focused on high scores or speed improvements, I do enjoy the challenge of conquering difficult terrain.
To celebrate the new map release, Pure Rock Crawling is currently 50% off, priced at £6.39/$7.49/€7.39 at the time of writing.
