Project Citadel is a new RTS inspired by Halo Wars from former Ensemble and BonusXP devs

There have been numerous attempts to revitalize the RTS genre lately, from nostalgic throwbacks like Age Of Mythology: Retold to innovative games like Battle Aces. While none have quite hit the mark, it’s always exciting to see new ideas in the world of Westwood. Enter Project Citadel, a new space-themed RTS from Last Keep, a studio formed by former developers from BonusXP (creators of Stranger Things) and Ensemble (known for Age Of Empires). The game pits players against an alien empire, combining squad mechanics similar to Halo Wars with a roguelike format designed for shorter play sessions, while still allowing for classic strategy tactics like booming and rushing.

Curious about terms like “booming” and “rushing”? You’re not alone – these are common strategies in traditional RTS games. “Booming” involves focusing on building up your economy at the start of a match, while “rushing” is all about launching an early offensive with inexpensive units. Project Citadel aims to incorporate these strategies into a procedurally generated, turn-based campaign, where players navigate a galactic map filled with smaller RTS battles. The key construction element is your mothership, which can create starbases and provide support in combat.
One notable absence in Project Citadel is the strategy of “turtling,” where players heavily fortify their defenses early on. Instead, the game keeps players on the offensive, constantly challenging them to take down the Voltari empire. According to ex-Microsoft and Battlefy executive Yohan Sengamalay, the inclusion of roguelike elements is about “deconstructing” the strategy genre, offering shorter missions within a roguelike structure for quicker rewards and more experimentation.
In terms of unit control, Project Citadel introduces squad-based combat with added movement and skill-shot abilities for timing emphasis. Players command squadrons rather than individual units, allowing for gameplay on both controllers and mouse/keyboard setups. The game features a variety of ships, from agile missile-vomiting vessels to durable behemoths, each with unique skill-shots like ramming through enemy formations.
Setting itself apart from other RTS games, Project Citadel aims to break away from the trend of remakes and spiritual successors by offering a fresh take on the genre. Last Keep, a small indie studio, is focused on innovation rather than rehashing past successes like Age of Empires. While some may be skeptical of blending roguelike elements with RTS gameplay, the team behind Project Citadel is determined to deliver a unique and engaging experience.
As someone who appreciates the attempt to reinvent traditional formats, I’m eager to see how Project Citadel will fare in the competitive world of RTS games. With its unique blend of gameplay mechanics and fresh approach to the genre, this game has the potential to stand out among its predecessors. Stay tuned for more updates on Project Citadel’s release on Steam.
